After School Classes The Oak Knoll PTO currently sponsors a variety of afternoon classes. |
Here is a description of the Fall 2007-2008 afternoon classes: Science Adventures: 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th Make and take home projects every week with "Hands On" curriculum designed to encompass all of the national science content standards. Enter anatomy academy with Club Guts, create a rock collection and display case through Science Rocks, voyage through the solar system in Planet Zone, explore the science of fun during Toyology, create hocus pocus with a magic focus in Science Magic and study the ecosystem with Creepy Crawlies. Sports 4 Kids: K-2nd A fun class directed by Jim Heebner. Kids work on sportsmanship, jumping rope, catching, throwing, dribbling, hitting balls, and playing lots of games. A place where kids can feel good about themselves regardless of ability. A great confidence booster. After School Hoops: K-2nd, 3rd-5th Italian Language & Culture (taught through IEI): K-2nd, 3rd-5th The Istitute Educazione Italiana (IEI) is a nonprofit cultural organization housed on the campus of Menlo College in Atherton. The group's mission is to disseminate Italian culture and language in the Bay Area. Oak Knoll classes for children will focus on language, and will highlight the history, art, and way of life of this wonderful country. Lego™ Engineering: 1st-5th (New Students Only) Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, truss and suspension bridges, buildings and other constructions. Explore concepts in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, and architecture while playing with your favorite creations. This is hands-on, minds-on class suitable for LEGO Technic novices to "maniacs". Returning students will work on new challenges and projects. Kinder Music: K Drum Circle: 3rd-5th Afterschool Math: K-5th Afterschool math is run by Foundations for Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving K-12 education in the United States. The after-school math program that we run at Oak Knoll is focused on making math fun. Children work in small groups with Stanford undergrads. Know Chess: K, 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th Chess teaches critical and abstract thinking, planning, logic and patience. These chess classes are suited for any student interested in chess, from utter beginner to the more advanced student. We will review basic chess rules, and then proceed to chess notation, basic tactics, and tournament rules. A typical class will include 30 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes of games. Choir: 3rd-5th In this class, your child will learn the basics of healthy singing-individually and as part of a vocal ensemble-all within a fun learning environment where they will explore the basics of rhythm and melody (and peripherally, good citizenship and how to work as a team). Using a dynamic, positive teaching approach, Karen Carle will lead students on a musical journey of self-discovery through classics, folk and show music. Berlitz Language Spanish, Beginning: K Spanish, Beginning & Intermediate: 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th Mandarin, Beginning: K, 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th Film-Making: 3rd-5th Atherton Lacrosse: 2nd-5th Try Lacrosse! A new Lacrosse program offers beginners a chance to learn the hottest new sport in West Coast schools. Come out to learn to play this fantastic sport (Sports Illustrated calls it the "fastest growing sport in the U.S.") and have fun with new friends. Great opportunity to learn more about Lacrosse!! We will cover the basics of Lacrosse from cradling, passing scooping and shooting. For boys and girls. |
